October was a month of loss, acceptance, and transition.  I lost all my documents, injured my left shoulder, and really that's all I feel like going into right now.

Happy Halloween!  So, what's everyone dressing up as?  I decided to be Matthew D Winfrey, Ninja Lawyer!

I think we are moving into a new intellectual era.  We seem to be rejecting post-modernism in favor of partial absolutism.  In a partial absolutist world, there are only a few objective tenets, expressed in the negative: genocide is always wrong, rape is always wrong--these sorts of absolutes.  This differs from absolutism or natural law in that these few principles exist independent of any greater source, or, rather, humanity is the source, instead of God or nature.  This is basically a compromise between the id and the conscience.

Inherent in a challenge is risk, but we need to be challenged in order to grow.  Complacency does not make us better.  (This is my reason for rock climbing and sky diving, but you can use it where needed.)

Excellent suggestions, but in my experience sometimes giving cash is the best thing you can do.  (You need to talk to the person to find out.)  At least know where the local shelters are so you can give directions.  If this entry makes no sense to you, then you need to read this.

My sister Sarah is home from Taylor for fall break, and she already seems different.  My little baby is all grown up.  Also, yo, yo, a big shout out to my homie, Eric, on his birthday.

I now think that everyone should be required to take a basic gun safety course.  Because really, as per the liberal, politically correct zeitgeist of today, all that we need to prevent accidents and violence with guns is education.

This weekend I'm taking a shooting course (called Basic Personal Protection) because, truth be told, I'm a lousy shot.  Of course, I don't actually own a handgun or even ever go shooting, but these piddly details aren't going to stop me from learning a new skill, no sir.

Every known language uses very different sounds for the words yes and no.  Each culture quickly recognized the importance of making a clear distinction between these words and their meanings, indicating that despite the enormous differences in languages, there are still some common factors.  Well, I thought it was interesting.

During routine maintenance of my computer, I decided to try something new, which eventually forced me to reformat and repartition my hard drive.  This was not what I had intended and was a huge pain, but it really wasn't a big deal until yesterday when I found out that I inadvertently deleted my email software, which wouldn't have been so bad if all my email hadn't gone with it.  Still, I was coping until just now, when I found out I also deleted all of my documents.  This is a bitter blow from which I am still reeling.  I only hope I have some sort of backup copy from last year that I can salvage.

On the kayaking trip I learned that kayaking, while a whole lot of fun, is harder than it looks, and that it is important to always wear your helmet.

Today I got my license and was sworn in as an attorney. Also, I'm going on a kayaking trip for a few days. I'll let you know how it went upon my return.
